Carles Fernández Prades (Barcelona, 1976) received the MS and PhD (cum-laude) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in 2001 and 2006, respectively. During the pursuit of his PhD, he was recipient of a 2001-2004 PhD scholarship granted by the Spanish Ministry of Education.

In 2001 he joined the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at UPC as a research assistant, getting involved in research projects at European and National levels. In 2002, he launched an educational innovation project, funded by the Catalan Government, that developed e-learling services and applications about signal processing and communications systems. In 2003, he served as technical manager at UPC for a European Space Agency research related to the search and rescue service to be included in Galileo. He served as occasional lecturer (2001-2004) and as associate professor (2005) at UPC in the field of analog and digital communications.

In 2006 he joined CTTC, although during the second semester of 2007 he was a visiting lecturer at Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana del Estado de Chile (UTEM) in Santiago. In his research activities, he made contributions in synchronization techniques for antenna arrays, nonlinear Bayesian filtering, positioning techniques, design of radio frequency front-ends for GNSS receivers and software-defined radio, authoring more than 100 papers in international, peer-reviewed journals and conferences, several book chapters and public research reports. He has been advisor of 2 PhD Theses (both of them got the EURASIP Best PhD Thesis Award, in 2014 and 2015) and several MS Theses in Electrical Engineering at UPC and in Computer Engineering at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). Since 2012, he is an IEEE Senior Member and served as IEEE AESS Magazine Associate Editor.

During his professional career at CTTC, he has promoted and actively participated in the elaboration of many research proposals at National and International level, and has participated in many R&D projects related to wireless communications and navigation systems: TIMI (Project leader at CTTC), m:Ciudad (Project leader at CTTC), NARRA (researcher), SOSRAD (researcher) and ADVENTURE, where he was Principal Investigator, and currently in ARISTIDES at the National level; NEWCOM++ (researcher), RFCSET (researcher and group leader), NEWCOM# (researcher), TIMON (researcher), FANTASTIC-5G (researcher) and AUDITOR (Project leader at CTTC) at the European level (FP7 and H2020 Programmes); and with the industry, mainly working in European Space Agency-funded projects: MIMOSAT, ARTEMISA (researcher and co-PI), CoupledETC (Principal Investigator), OLGNSS, GNSS Space SW Receiver in Zynq (Principal Investigator), among others.

At CTTC, he served as Coordinator of the Communications Subsystems Area (2006 – 2013), Head of the Communications Systems Division (2013 – 2016) and Head of Statistical Inference for Communications and Positioning Department (2016 – present date).

He is also the original promoter and Project Manager of GNSS-SDR, an open-source, software-defined GNSS receiver that has raised world-wide interest, and today it is included in popular GNU/Linux distributions.
