Paolo Dini received the PhD in Information and Communication Science and Technologies (2005) and the ‘laurea’ in Electronic Engineering (2001) both from Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”.
From 2001 to 2005, he worked as a research assistant in the Computer Science and Systems (DIS) and the Information and Communication (INFOCOM) departments of Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”. In 2005, he worked with the Research Centre on Software Technologies (RCOST) – Università del Sannio – as a research assistant. In the same year, he was also part-time professor at the INFOCOM department, lecturing the course of ‘Comunicazioni Elettriche’.
Since 2006, he is with CTTC and coordinates the activities of the Sustainable Artificial Intelligence research unit.

His research interests encompass information engineering with particular emphasis on sustainable networking and computing, distributed optimization and optimal control, multi-agent systems, decision making processes, machine learning, data mining, analytics, and energy efficiency.

In his career, he has participated in over 25 research projects, 7 of them as PI (project coordinator or technical manager), 8 as CTTC-PI. He has been continuously promoting several funding initiatives and applications to EU competitive programs (FP5, FP6, FP7, H2020), national and regional governments, and private industries (Cisco, Huawei, Nokia, Toshiba, Orange, TIM). He has been contributing to different technology platforms, like Networld2020, Circular Economy Hotspot Catalunya, 5GBarcelona, 5GItaly, and standardization bodies (3GPP-SA group). Hence, he has created a solid network of international cooperation, built over fifteen years of multidisciplinary research activity.

He has been awarded by the Silicon Valley Foundation (Cisco) in 2008 and 2011 for his research on mobility management in heterogeneous networks. In 2018, he has been invited to the Coordinators’ InfoDay organized by the EU Research Executive Agency (REA) as an example of ‘ITN Best Practices’ for the coordination activities of H2020-MSCA-ETN-SCAVENGE. Currently, he is the coordinator of the CHIST-ERA SONATA project and the scientific coordinator of H2020-MSCA-ETN-GREENEDGE.
In 2021 he has been appointed as European Climate Pact Ambassador.

He has been actively organizing workshops and special sessions at different international venues (IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE SECON, IEEE WCNC, IEEE ICASSP, IEEE PIMRC, among others), chairing most of them. He is Topic Board Editor of the MDPI Sensors (IF 3.275) journal and within the technical program committee of multiple conferences of IEEE and ACM.
He co-organized over 10 training events and PhD courses in the field of machine learning, distributed optimization, sustainable networking, energy-aware cloud/edge computing, smart grid, renewable energy.

He recurrently participates in outreach activities (Catalan Science Week, European Green Week, Research Nights, to mention some).

He got the Accreditation of Research (Associate Professorship) by AQU Catalunya in 2021. He also received the National Scientific Habilitation to Associate Professorship (ASN – Seconda Fascia) for Italian Universities in 2021.
Since 2018, he is also serving as a reviewer of project proposals for the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) and regional governments of Italy.

He supervised 4 PhD thesis (alumni are now with CTTC, Huawei, Exein, Ericsson) and over 30 MSc thesis or internships. He has been invited to 5 PhD thesis evaluation boards. He is currently coordinating 4 PhD students and multiple post-docs.

He is the author of 5 book chapters, around 90 papers in scientific journals and international (peer-reviewed) conferences, and 1 patent.
