Who are we looking for?

The Packet Optical Networks and Services (PONS) Research Unit is searching for interested candidates in a Researcher position.

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, empathic person, with passion for research and desire to learn and explore new technologies, aiming at significantly improving her or his professional career in a stimulating environment and within a dynamic and internationally recognized research group.

The successful candidate will join the PONS research unit to carry out research in topics and participate in projects tackled by the RU related to micro-service software development and cloud-native platforms, NFV platforms, SDN platforms, testbed management and proof-of-concepts for packet-optical networks.

Qualifications and Experience

  • We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, energetic person, aiming at significantly improving his or her career perspectives in both public and private sectors. The successful applicant should have the competencies of R2 category.
  • The successful applicant must hold a MSc degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, computer science, or closely related fields.
  • The position requires a previous experience of three or more years in the Catalan research system.

Required qualification/skills/  experience:

  • Knowledge of micro-service development and Cloud-native platforms (e.g., LXC Containers/Docker/Docker-Compose/Kubernetes/Helm)
  • Experience in hands-on NFV platforms (e.g., OSM, ONAP, …)
  • Experience in hands-on optical and packet SDN network platforms (e.g., ONOS, OpenDayLight, …)
  • Hands-on experience on testbed management and proof-of-concept / demo skills.
  • Knowledge of Linux programming and system administration skills.
  • Programming and data representation skills and related tools (especially Python, YAML, JSON, …)
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Other skills that are valuable, but not mandatory are:

  • Good publication record in journals and conferences
  • Version Control and CI/CD tools (e.g., GitLab, GitLab Runner, …)
  • Knowledge of current technology trends in SDN/NFV network control and management, networking and cloud concepts and technologies.
  • Knowledge of 5G, including the mobile core and RAN, SA and NSA equipment/software (open- or closed-source)
  • Capabilities to interact with diverse APIs (e.g., based on REST) exposed by diverse open-source implementations
  • Familiar with standardization activities such as ETSI IFA, ONF, etc.
