On 19th September 2023 at 12:00h the CTTC will host the seminar “On Cellular Communications for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles”. In this seminar Dr. David López-Pérez will present:

Abstract

As we head towards a pervasive digital transformation, aiming at more efficient, automated and flexible processes, a growing number of tasks are being delegated to machines. Drones—a.k.a. UAVs—, the most mobile of them all, are the logical candidates to take over many such missions. What will it take for drones—and the whole associated ecosystem—to take off? Arguably, infallible command and control channels for safe and autonomous flying and high-throughput links for multi-purpose live video streaming. Meeting these aspirations may entail a full cellular support, provided through 5G-and-beyond hardware and software upgrades by both operators and UAV manufacturers.

Will current cellular networks suffice to meet the demanding UAV communication link requirements? Or should the operators, primarily catering to ground users, implement substantial upgrades? In this talk, well founded answers to such—and other—key questions will be unfolded.

Bio

Dr. David López-Pérez is a Distinguished Researcher at Universitat Politècnica de València. Prior to this, David was an Expert and Technical Leader at Huawei Technologies, Paris, and a Distinguished Member of Staff at Nokia Bell Labs, Dublin.

David has devoted most of his career to the study of both cellular and Wi-Fi networks, where his main research interests are in network performance analysis, network planning and optimisation as well as green networking and technology and feature development.

David’s main contributions are around the understanding of small cells and ultra-dense networks as well as green communications. He has also pioneered work on cellular and Wi-Fi inter-working, and investigated both multi-antenna capabilities and ultra-reliable low latency features for future indoor networks.

David has authored 2 books on small cells, has published more than 150 research manuscripts, and holds 59 patents. David has received a number of prestigious awards (IEEE ComSoc Best Young Professional in 2016, IEEE WCNC Best student paper award in 2019, and IEEE Globecom best paper award in 2022). Among others, David has also been project lead at Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance, and is a retired editor of IEEE TWC.

This talk is open to whoever interested from the research community
