»     CTTC shows at its booth at MWC’18 (CS20, Booth34) work in progress with respect to one of the key architectural blocks of the 5G-Transformer architecture, the Mobile Transport and Computing Platform (MTP).

Barcelona, February 26, 2018 – Among all its research, the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) presents its latest results on future 5G mobile transport network architecture at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018. This work is developed under the umbrella of the H2020 5GPPP 5G-TRANSFORMER project (http://5g-transformer.eu/), which aims to apply SDN/NFV techniques to transform current rigid mobile transport networks into the 5G dynamic mobile transport network managing networking and computing resources tailored to the specific needs of vertical industries, such as eHealth, automotive, media and industry 4.0. In addition to SDN/NFV, network slicing, multi-access edge computing (MEC), and federation concepts are seen as key enablers to allow such transformation.

Within 5G-TRANSFORMER project, CTTC participates in the definition and implementation of the three key building blocks of the 5G-Transformer architecture. These blocks are: the Vertical Slicer (VS), for supporting the creation and management of slices to verticals; the Service Orchestrator (SO), for end-to-end service orchestration and federation of resources from multiple domains, and the Mobile Transport and Computing platform (MTP), managing the underlying unified fronthaul and backhaul transport network stratum.  CTTC presents at its booth at MWC’18 (CS20, Booth34) a demonstration of the MTP, built on the foundations of 5GPPP phase-1 Project 5G-Crosshaul (http://5g-crosshaul.eu/). In this demo, it is shown how, with open APIs, it is possible to dynamically create end-to-end network paths in the order of few seconds, as opposed to today’s network operators practice, which is in the order of days.

5G-TRANSFORMER is a H2020 5G-PPP phase-2 project leveraging on the solutions developed in H2020 5G-PPP phase-1 projects such as 5G-Crosshaul and 5GEx. 5G-TRANSFORMER is a 30-month research and innovation action, receiving EU funding of 7.9M€. A consortium of 18 partners, including vertical industries, manufacturers, network operators, service providers, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), research centers and universities carries it out. The different skills and perspectives provided by the variety of partners ensures an effective design of such architecture for 5G mobile networks. Topics dealt within the project cover directly or indirectly all eight core themes of MWC’18.
