5G-LENA towards O-RAN: industrial contract with Huawei on 5G fronthaul compression strategies for next-generation Radio Access Networks


CTTC has successfully completed an industrial contract with Huawei to analyze next-generation, virtualized, and multi-vendor RAN architectures. Research has focused on the design of efficient methods to reduce resource utilization on the fronthaul interface with reasonably low air interface performance degradation by means of compression techniques, in line with O-RAN architectures. This has allowed building 5G-LENA extensions considering initial features and functionalities from O-RAN. Further evolution will be studied in the new 6G-BLUR project.
