CIUDEN is a research project led by the former Institute of Geomatics (IG) and funded by the Programme of Geological Storage of CO2 from the Fundación Ciudad de la Energía (CIUDEN), Spanish Government (ES).
The general objectives of this project are related to the study, development and validation of measurement and monitoring techniques for terrain deformation associated with the life cycle of an industrial CO2 storage.

Deformation monitoring will be carried out through observations taken at the surface level, i.e. avoiding test drilling costly operations. In addition, most of the data can be acquired by means of remote sensing techniques that need a limited access to the study area. Deformation monitoring techniques include a wide range of methods with very different characteristics, performances and cost. Considering the type of study, the IG proposes to consider, in the first approach, the use of interferometric techniques based on SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data.It is expected to work at two different scales using two complementary interferometric techniques, depending on the general characteristics of the study area and, especially, on the required spatial and temporal resolutions,. The first technique, DInSAR (Differential Interferometric SAR), is based on satellite SAR data. The second one, GB-SAR (Ground-Based SAR), is based on terrestrial instrumentation (close-range remote sensing).
