In the frame of a research project founded by the Italian Ministero dell’Università, dell’Istruzione e della Ricerca (PON01-02710 – “Monitoraggio in Area Sismica di SIstemi MOnumentali – MASSIMO”), the Geomatics Division was commissioned to carry out some experimental activities based on the application of ground based radar interferometry. The main objective of the project is the mitigation of seismic vulnerability related to both Cultural and Historical buildings, especially when considering monumental heritages located on seismic areas. Within such a framework, Non Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques and proximal remotely sensed tools play a key role for providing the damage detection and the conservation status evaluation, especially in response to seismic hazards. Based on this rationale, the Project proposes to provide a methodology relevant to the integrated use of Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS), Infrared Thermal Camera (IR-TC) and Radar sensors for both the structural health monitoring and the seismic risk mitigation of monumental heritages. The study is based on two experimental campaigns carried out in Calabria region (Italy). Deformation and vibration studies are focused towards three sites and using two radar terrestrial techniques: Ground-based SAR (GB-SAR) and Real Aperture Radar (RAR), used to monitor the historical centre of Cosenza, and the dynamical response of different buildings respectively. The activity consists of radar data acquisition, processing, vibration/deformation estimation, and its integration with data provided by the other sensors.
