Weekly Seminar: “CASTLE: A user-friendly platform to test, evaluate, and develop contemporary wireless communication standards”

CASTLE is a hybrid testbed composed of both software and hardware components that can be easily configured to obtain standard-compliant implementations of specific network elements in contemporary wireless communication systems. CASTLE focuses on PHY-layer features of different wireless standards, including LTE and LTE Advanced (mobile communications), BGAN (satellite communications), and Li-Fi (Visible Light Communications). CASTLE provides user-friendly interfaces (web-based, C++/Matlab API), enabling an easy preparation of a wide range of experiments without the necessity of installing any dedicated software/hardware in the local computer of the end user. In this presentation, a general overview of the characteristics of CASTLE will be first presented. Then, different illustrative examples of wireless communication experiments, which can be easily executed by CASTLE in dedicated servers located at the premises of CTTC, will be shown. The presentation will conclude with the future direction that the development of CASTLE platform is planned to take, which is expected to be aligned with the specific needs that the different Divisions of CTTC have in the area of Software-Defined Radio.


Pol Henarejos was born in Barcelona in 1985. He received his Telecommunications Engineering Degree and MERIT Master’s Degree from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in 2009 and 2012, respectively. In Jan. 2010, he joined the Centre Tecnològic de les Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC), where he has worked on the Software-Defined Radio prototyping of different PHY layer features of various wireless communication technologies, such as 3GPP Rel. 9 (LTE), 3GPP Rel. 12 (LTE Advanced), BGAN, and IEEE 802.15.7 (Visible Light Communications). Pol is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at the UPC, doing research in the area of multi-cell and multi-antenna wireless communication systems.

Alexis A. Dowhuszko received the Telecommunications Engineering degree from Blas Pascal University, Cordoba, Argentina, in 2002, and the Ph.D. degree in Engineering Sciences from the National University of Cordoba, Argentina, in 2010. From 2010 to 2015, he was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Communications and Networking, Aalto University, Finland. He joined the Centre Tecnològic de les Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) in early 2016, to carry out research on disruptive communication concepts, technologies, and architectures in the context of 5G networks and beyond.
