Weekly Seminar: “Automation of 5G Core Networks”

ABSTRACT:

In the framework of IEEE’s DL Tour, Dr. Al-Dulaimi will present the Seminar entitled “Automation of 5G Core Networks”.

The fifth-generation core network (5GC) will be deployed in the form of software packages running in cloud datacenters. This 5GC is structured in different forms of reference point and service-based architecture (SBA) that are all running concurrently in cloud. However, this migration towards native-cloud deployments makes 5GC vulnerable to various cyber and physical complexities causing additional time delays for service processing. Therefore, it is necessary to define new architectural models that enforce  5G performance requirements of sub-milliseconds delays and multigigabit throughputs. In this distinguished lecture at  CTTC, we explore fully automated networks that employ orchestrators to reduce the impacts of underlaying computing infrastructure through sophisticated deployments of local 5GCs at distributed-clouds. The goal is to create a vision forward for fully interconnected networks that bridge various physical and virtual domains.

SPEAKER:

Anwer Al-Dulaimi (M’11, SM’17) received the PhD degree in electronic and computer engineering from Brunel University London, Uxbridge, U.K., in 2012, after obtaining BSc and MSc honor degrees in communication engineering. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Toronto, Canada. Currently, he is a technical Product Owner (TPO) in the Center of Excellence (R&D) at EXFO Inc., Montreal Canada. His research interests include 5G networks, cloud networks, V2X and Internet of Things. He is the chair of the IEEE 1932.1 Working Group “Standard for Licensed/Unli­censed Spectrum Interoperability in Wireless Mobile Network” and IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. He is a Senior Member of IEEE (SMIEEE), Associate Fellow of the British higher educa­tion Academy (AFHEA), and registered as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) by the British Engineering Council. Dr. Al-Dulaimi is the editor of IEEE 5G Future Networks Series in IEEE Vehicular Technology magazine, Editor of Vehicular Networking Series in IEEE Standards Magazine, AE of IEEE Communications Magazine, and guest editor in many IEEE journals.  He was the recipient of the 2013 Worldwide Universities Network Cognitive Communications Consortium best paper for outstanding research in cognitive communications for his book entitled “Self-Organization and Green Applications in Cognitive Radio Networks.”
