The CTTC will participate in the 22nd edition of the Science Week 2017

The Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI – Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació) organizes this year, from 10 to 19 of November, the 22nd Science Week, during which many events will be held in Catalonia. All of them will have the International year of sustainable tourism for development as the main character.

The CTTC takes part in this event with a speech given by the Project Management Coordinator, Dr. M. Svaluto-Moreolo and researchers of the CTTC (E. Fernández, D. Temesgene, N. Piovesan, Fco. J. Vílchez, L. Nadal, M. Requena, J. Mangues).

This speech, entitled “CTTC & RESEARCH, will be given on November 16, at 10 am. Assistants to the event will visit our laboratories and will see some of our prototips and demos.

  • Mapping the Moon.

A researcher from the Geomatics Division of the CTTC will show how they are developing systems that will improve the generation of cartography and gravity models of the planetary bodies of the solar system and, in particular, of the Moon. There will also be a prototype “microrrover lunar” in motion, which can generate 3D models of the surface of the Moon by means of sensors of low cost and that includes inertial systems, odometers and a Kinect camera, among others.

  •  Project: SCAVENGE: a European Training Network for PhD students.

In this talk we introduce our work in SCAVENGE, an European Training Network. The project is about sustainable design for mobile communication systems by engineering the integration and the control of renewable energy sources within communication network elements, such as base stations and mobile phones. We will describe the main objectives of the Network, detailing the training and research activities that we have been carrying out during our first year of work.

  • Laboratory of the Optical Networks and Systems Department.

Visit to the laboratory of the Optical Networks and Systems Department: description of the lab facilities and the architecture of the ADRENALINE testbed® optical network. This demonstrator enables de flexible deployment of two main demonstration platforms: on the one hand, in the room 0.03 the SDN/NFV Cloud Computing Platform and Core Network for 5G Services encompasses multiple interrelated although independent components and prototypes, to offer end-to-end services, interconnecting users and applications across a wide range of heterogeneous networks technologies for the development and test of 5G services; on the other hand, an Experimental Platform for Optical OFDM Systems (EOS) is implemented, in theroom 0.02, specifically for the design and experimental validation of flexible O-OFDM transmission schemes.

  • Laboratory of the Mobile Networks Department.

The Mobile Networks department of the Communication networks division of the CTTC works on the optimization of mobile networks and edge transport networks, including IT resources. This includes 5G-related topics such as SDN, NFV, MEC, novel RAN splits, energy management, or machine learning for RAN and transport optimization. The department follows an experimental approach and evaluates most techniques over the EXTREME Testbed, which features a network and IT substrate in-lab and also distributed throughout the building. During the visit, we will explain what we do in terms of research, the goal and main building blocks of the testbed, and the projects carried out over the testbed (e.g., 5G-Crosshaul, flex5Gware, 5GNORM).

  • Projects: 5G-TRANSFORMER-5g Mobile Transport Platform for Veriticals and 5g-Norm.

The fourth generation (4G) networks based on LTE technology (Long Term Evolution) are just being deployed and 5G are already being designed and standardized. Some of its objectives are: multiplying by 1000 the traffic managed by the network, reducing its energy consumption by 90%, reducing the time of deployment of new services from hours to minutes, connecting 7 billion devices, or reducing time of response from the network to a few milliseconds. All this has implications in all the components of the network. A fundamental segment is the transport network, which must allow transporting all of this traffic and offering services, adapting dynamically to demand. This talk will give examples of the research being carried out on the 5G-TRANSFORMER and 5G-NORM projects in the design of 5G networks.
