On 22nd November 2023 at 14:45h the CTTC will host the seminar “Investment gaps in digital infraestructure”. In this seminar Pau Castells will present:
5G, the latest generation of mobile communications, brings the potential to deliver new use cases and enterprise applications that can help achieve faster long-term economic growth and prosperity. However, 5G faces a significant investment gap in the presence of changing market and technology dynamics, as well as public policies that often distort and stifle investment incentives. In the case of European countries, for example, the European Commission has estimated that an additional investment in mobile and fixed gigabit networks of at least EUR 174 billion (but more likely beyond EUR 200 billion) will be required to meet its Digital Decade targets by 2030. What can we expect global markets to deliver in the next 5-10 years, in terms of coverage and investment? What do the latest data, market trends and empirical research tell us about how the digital networks of the future will be financed?
Pau Castells leads the economic research department of GSMA, the global association of mobile operators. He is responsible for the publication of economic research on telecommunications and the digital ecosystem, playing an active role in setting the economic choices for the industry across key strategic topics. Before joining the GSMA, he worked as an economist both in the financial sector as well as in several UK government departments, specialising in the economic analysis of public policy and regulation in the ICT and digital sectors. Aside from economic research, he makes regular public speaking engagements and with the media. Pau holds a Ph. D. in Economics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
