Two innovations developed within the EU-funded 5G-STARDUST project have been identified by the European Commission’s Innovation Radar, with CTTC recognized as a Key Innovator for its contribution to their development through the work carried out within the Space and Resilient Communications and Systems (SRCOM) Research Unit.
The innovations recognized are “Beam management for Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN)” and “Data enhanced RIC: AI-based Radio Resource Management for demand prediction and resource allocation”. Both address key technological challenges in the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks and in the development of more adaptive and intelligent 5G and beyond-5G systems.
The first innovation focuses on beam management for Non-Terrestrial Networks, addressing the design and optimization of beam layouts, beamforming, beam hopping and resource allocation for satellite communications. Research carried out within 5G-STARDUST includes approaches for efficiently providing 3GPP NTN common signaling over large coverage areas using LEO satellites.
The second innovation, Data enhanced RIC, explores AI-based Radio Resource Management to support demand prediction and resource allocation. This work builds on CTTC’s contribution to the project in the design of a data-enhanced Radio Intelligence Controller (RIC), supporting more adaptive and intelligent operation of integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks.
5G-STARDUST aims to design, develop and demonstrate a flexible satellite system integrated with terrestrial infrastructure, supporting self-organised network architectures and intelligent multi-connectivity. The project addresses the integration of 5G terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks and explores AI-based techniques for adaptive network operation and resource allocation.
Congratulations to the whole 5G-STARDUST team on this recognition!
