This is the second part of Permapyrenees, where a team of specialists from various regions of the POCTEFA territory will expand permafrost monitoring toward the western and eastern ends of the range. This will involve combining advanced remote sensing technologies with in situ instrumentation, along with four new boreholes to strengthen the monitoring network. Integrating this data will allow the creation of detailed maps showing the distribution of permafrost and associated risks, which are expected to grow in a warmer world. The project will also assess the effects on high mountain ecosystems, and results will be shared with land managers through accessible products (maps, reports, etc.), helping to implement preventive measures in high-traffic areas. In addition, awareness-raising activities will be carried out to inform the public about the natural heritage of permafrost and the impacts of climate change in the Pyrenees.
