The 6G-EDONIS project addresses the enhancement of the ADRENALINE Testbed®, a multi-layer (packet/optical) transport network demonstrator. The enhancements are focused on the advanced 5G and 6G domain, where network operators need to cope with increasingly demanding service requirements: high capacity, controlled latency, high availability, and flexibility, etc. 6G-EDONIS evolves ADRENALINE testbed® into a transport and computing platform where flexible, scalable, and efficient solutions to meet 5G/6G requirements can be explored, developed, and validated. 6G-EDONIS is built on three pillars: 1) programmability, the elements (i.e., optical switches, routers, cloud) are controlled via SDN/NFV; 2) multi-layer transport, combining granular multiplexing of packet technology and large transport capacity of the optical domain; 3) disaggregation, open and standard elements (whiteboxes) remove the vendor lock-in which does foster the competitiveness. The result of 6G-EDONIS will be an experimental multi-layer disaggregated fronthaul/backhaul infrastructure with distributed computing resources. It will be open to other external users to progress on the research and innovation in 5G/6G networks and services.
