About the Seminar
In this talk, Prof. Maksim Skorobogatiy will review several state-of-the-art techniques for subwavelength imaging and high-bit-rate communications using terahertz (THz) waves (100–1000 GHz for the purposes of this talk). Although THz waves have been heralded for more than a decade as a key enabling technology for next generation non-destructive imaging and sensing applications, as well as a potential game changer for wireless telecommunications, their industrial adoption has remained limited.
Prof. Maksim Skorobogatiy will discuss the major challenges facing this promising technology in achieving widespread industrial deployment through two representative examples: solid immersion microscopy for subwavelength imaging of conductive and semiconductor interfaces, and fiber-assisted THz communications for local area networks. Prof. Maksim Skorobogatiy will also share insights from my industrial experience in commercializing these technologies.
MAKSIM SKOROBOGATIY (Senior Member, IEEE; Fellow of OSA/Optica; Fellow of APS; Fellow of SPIE) received the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering and computer science and the Ph.D. degree in physics from MIT, in 2000 and 2001, respectively. In 2000 he joined MIT spin-off Clarendon Photonics involved in the development of integrated optical devices based on photonic crystals. In 2001 he joined another MIT startup OmniGuide Inc. where he worked on developing hollow-core fibers for guidance of high-power mid-IR laser beams, which are now sold for laser surgery systems worldwide. He has been a professor of engineering physics with the Polytechnique Montréal, since 2003. In 2017, he became an Elected Fellow of the Optical Society of America for his pioneering contributions to the development of micro-structured and photonic crystal multi-material fibers and their applications to light delivery, sensing, smart textiles, and arts. That same year, he was also promoted to a Senior Member of IEEE for his contribution to engineering and applied research. He was awarded the Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Micro and Nano Photonics, in 2005 and 2010, while in 2016, he was awarded the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Ubiquitous THz Photonics. The support from Canada Research Chairs Program allowed him to pursue many high-risk exploratory projects in guided optics, smart materials, and recently THz photonics, which have resulted in significant contributions in these booming research fields. In 2012, he was awarded the rank of a Professional Engineer by the Order of Engineers of Quebec, Canada. From 2024 Maksim Skorobogatiy serves as a technology advisor to a Silicon Valley startup Attotude Inc. working on development of fiber-assisted THz wave solutions for ultra-high-bit rate communications for AI acceleration in data centers.
