DestinE initiative aims to develop a digital model of the Earth with the ultimate objective of monitoring and modelling natural phenomena, hazards, and related human activities. This initiative seeks to achieve breakthroughs in the reliability, accuracy, and applicability of services, enhancing their modelling capabilities, temporal and spatial resolution, and user experience vis-à-vis climate change.

Land deformations and their changing patterns due to climate change, are a critical and often overlooked problem. Landslides, mudslides, subsidence, shore erosion and melting permafrost induced by high temperature, rising ocean level and changing precipitation patterns bear risks for infrastructures and habitational areas, as well as ecosystems, and require close monitoring and preparedness. The monitoring practices, at the same time, remain underdeveloped and outdated, the need for their radical upgrade and development is acute.

InSAR – Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) – is an Earth Observation technique proved to be exceptionally useful in monitoring of land deformations but despite its recent technical and commercial development remains underutilised by the practitioners in Europe and around the world.

GeoKinesia – an innovative deep-tech company from Barcelona, Spain, specialises in InSAR and InSAR-based services and CTTC – a research centre from Barcelona, Spain with over 25 years of experience in InSAR related R&D and a long-term GeoKinesia’s partner and the original GeoKinesia InSAR technology developer – formed a Consortium to participate in the Tender. Both companies have complementary competencies, have being the partners on several projects and have a good experience of working together.

The Consortium proposes to onboard on DestinE Platform 3 InSAR-based services:

  • Land deformation monitoring service (InSAR service).
  • Active Deformation Area (ADA) service.
  • Differential Deformation Map (DDM) service.

InSAR will expand the scope of DestinE ecosystem adding an important aspect of monitoring changes and threats, induced by the climate change and humanity’s economic activity on the ground. Thus, to the initial DestinE focus on atmosphere and hydrosphere an important aspect of geosphere will be added, which will make the DestinE ecosystem more holistic and able to address a larger customer base.
