[edit] Biography

Begonya Otal received her M.Sc. degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in 2001. She worked prior as undergraduate trainee in BOSCH-BLAUPUNKT (Hildesheim, Germany, 2000) at the department of "Advanced Engineering of Multimedia Systems" on the field of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB). From 2001 to 2006, she was full-time employed as Research Scientist by PHILIPS Research Laboratories (Aachen, Germany).

Within PHILIPS Research Labs, she participated in several industrial projects, first as a member of "Connectivity Systems" [i],[ii] and later of "Medical Signal Processing" [iii] groups:

  • [i] UMTS Standardisation project (2001-2002) funded by the former PHILIPS Semiconductors. During this period, she attended a number of international UMTS standardisation meetings (3GPP RAN WG2). Four invention disclosures were generated as first author, from which two became patent application.
  • [ii] Self-Organizing Networks with Multi-hop Links project (2003-2004) funded by the former PHILIPS Semiconductors and PHILIPS Consumer Electronics. She took part of a standardisation consortium (TGn Sync) chaired by Intel for IEEE 802.11 MAC Task Group N “High Throughput”. She also collaborated in MultiHop and WIGWAM, two German-national projects funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Within the time throughout these projects, eleven invention disclosures were written, from which five were filed as patent applications. Some publications, one as invited paper, were presented in international conferences.
  • [iii] Personal Healthcare Applications project (2005-2006) funded by PHILIPS Medical Systems. The aim of the project was to provide new application scenarios in the area of diabetes management. This project was run in close cooperation with colleagues from “Care & Health Applications” group (NatLab, PHILIPS Research Europe, Eindhoven, the Netherlands), with whom a book chapter was written. Part of her work supported MyHeart an Integrated Project, funded by the IST programme of the European Commission's 6th Framework. She was also co-author of four invention disclosures.

In 2003 still within PHILIPS Research Labs., she decided to start pursuing a PhD together with the Signal Theory and Communications Department (TSC) from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona. At the end of January 2006, she joined CTTC in order to keep on fully working on her PhD in the area of wireless ambient and body sensor networks for medical applications.

[edit] Research lines

Her current research interest areas include wireless sensor networks, IEEE 802.15.4, MAC protocol solutions, scheduling algorithms based on cross-layer, power management techniques, fuzzy logic and medical applications where to apply these enhanced technologies.
