The aim of this project is to support the efficient « door to door » movement of goods, using two or more modes of transport, in an integrated transport chain. Each mode of transport has its own advantages e.g. potential capacity, high levels of safety, flexibility, low energy consumption, low environmental impact; intermodal transport allows each mode to play its role in building transport chains which overall are more efficient, cost effective and sustainable.

The major challenge of intermodality is the efficient management of the different modes of transport involved in an integrated transport chain, in which the technological innovation could be of great help. Experts have pointed towards integrated planification, tracking of vehicles and goods, the potential and services offered by the satellite navigation system Galileo, the Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) for ships or the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) as key technologies that will have a prominent role in intermodal transport managing systems.

This project joints important actors of Spanish transport, technological services providers, universities and research centers with the aim of creating a new generation of intelligent transport systems in order to meet the requirements of foreseen scenarios in a mid-term future.
