Bio

Nikos Bartzoudis (Alexandroupoli, Greece 1976) obtained his B.Sc. in Electronic Engineering at the Technical Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (Greece, 2000). He then pursued postgraduate studies and received his M.Sc. degree (in Digital Communication Systems) and Ph.D. degree (in dependable embedded systems) from Loughborough University (UK) in 2001 and 2006 respectively. In more detail, his doctoral research was related to automated logical analysis of protocol correctness, assertion-based monitoring of FPGA-based applications and concurrency issues in dependable real-time systems.

Nikos has worked 2 years as a Research Assistant (Loughborough University , UK, 2001-2003) implementing reconfigurable hardware solutions for "Active Networks". He has also worked more than two years as a Senior Research Officer (University of Essex , UK, 2005-2008) implementing a flexible low-cost sensor-processing node with built-in self-testing utilities.

He has joined the Engineering Unit of CTTC in January 2008, working as a senior engineer in baseband signal-processing implementations for multi-carrier systems.  Nikos is currently holding a Research Associate position after receiving a promotion (October 2008) and he is also in charge of the GEDOMIS testbed (April 2008). His main duties include the design and testing of FPGA-based IP blocks that implement bit-intensive baseband digital signal-processing algorithms. Nikos is also currently involved in supervising and mentoring activities for postgraduate students (PhD level). Other indicative details of his background are given below.

Project manager:

  • GEDOMIS-ADCOMM: GEDOMIS-ADaptive physical layer implementation of advanced multi-antenna COMMunication schemes. 2010 VALOR 00198, funded by AGAUR (Generalitat de Catalunya) 01/2011-01/2013. The goal of the project is from the one hand to take the legal steps to protect the IP of CTTC's MIMO mobile WiMAX prototype and from the other hand is to provide a commercialization roadmap.

  • BeMImoMAX: Industrial project aiming at selling software licenses (i.e., Matlab & VHDL) of CTTC's MIMO-OFDM mobile WiMAX baseband transceiver prototype via a third party.

Testbed coordinator:

  • GEDOMIS®: Laboratory environment that enables the prototyping of next generation broadband wireless communication systems, which feature bit-intensive OFDM PHY-layer techniques combined with multi-antenna schemes.

Participation in R & D projects:

  • "BuNGee: Beyond Next Generation Mobile Broadband", (01/01/10 - 30/06/12) FP7 project, funded by the EC. Grant agreement no: 248267

  • "MIMO technologies for Wireless Access", (16/01/08 - 30/06/09), Medea+ program funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Commerce & Tourism. Ref.: 2A103.

  • "Networking of Distributed Sensors for Proactive Condition Monitoring of Wind Turbines", (01/10/05 - 15/01/08), funded by EPSRC (UK). Ref.: EP/C014790/1-2.

  • "An Efficient and Flexible Architecture for Active Network Elements", (29/10/01 - 28/10/03), funded by EPSRC (UK). Ref.: GR/R31218/01.

Grants and awards:

  • Ph.D. studentship, Loughborough University, Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, UK (01/11/03 - 31/07/05).

  • M.Sc. grant (as part of a training-course) Essex University, Department of Computing and Electronic Systems, UK (01/10/06 - 31/01/07).

  • "Torres Quevedo" grant, Spanish ministry of education and science, National plan of scientific research, technologic development and innovation. Ref: PTQ-08-01-06441.
