Bio

Ernest S. Lo is the Chief Representative of the Hong Kong Branch of the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) in Barcelona, mainly responsible for branch setup and strategic planning. Prior to joining CTTC, he was a Croucher Postdoc Fellow at Stanford University and received his Ph.D., M.Phil. and B.Eng. (1st Hons., GGA: A) from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His current research interests cover new design opportunities for existing and future wireless multiuser networks for enhancement of flexibility and spectral & energy efficiencies. Previous work of him involved resource allocation, channel coding and wireless system-level design. He contributed to the standardization of the IEEE 802.22 cognitive radio WRAN system and holds several pending and granted US and China patents with some of them successfully transferred to companies.

Apart from his R&D career, he had been involved in various startup projects and pursuit of other interests. Before doing his Ph.D., he helped develop a startup company on intelligent toys with products available in major chain stores in HK and the gift shop of the HK Space Museum. At the same time, he co-chaired a photography club and organized large-scale activities with other popular local photography clubs for the time being. He had also been consulted by several startup project teams on communications-related products.

Dr. Lo has received two Best Paper Awards, one at the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2007, Glasgow, another one at the IEEE Global Communications Conference (GlobeCom), 2011, Houston. He was the award winner of the Croucher Fellowships in 2008 and a few others including the CenWIT Scholarship: R&D Excellence, HKTIIT Post-Graduate Excellence Scholarship, Shell Hong Kong Limited Scholarship, STMicroelectronics Ltd Scholarship, and several IEEE Research Travel Grants from the IEEE Communications Society, etc. He has been honoured as an Exemplary Reviewer of the IEEE Communications Letters and has been a TPC member of the IEEE PIMRC’09, IEEE ICC‘10,11,12, IEEE GLOBECOM‘10,11, and ICNC’12. He also served as an Editorial Assistant of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications - Wireless Series and the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications when it was founded.
